Notice

The article List of U.S. state cacti has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Texas did not declare a state cactus, but made a cactus the state plant. Effectively, this is a list with one entry. Alternative, Colorado could be added to List of U.S. state and territory plants and botanical gardens, but it is already a bit of a mashup.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Nomination of List of U.S. state cacti for deletion

[kulemba source]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of U.S. state cacti is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of U.S. state cacti until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

I saw that you considered that other states might designate a state cactus. They might not. I appreciate your further input. BiologicalMe (talk) 16:57, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Sir Vartan Melkonian: Draft declined

[kulemba source]

Hello! I recently worked on a draft for an Armenian man, Sir Vartan Melkonian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Vartan_Melkonian). As you can see, my submission was declined for not adhering to a neutral POV and for lacking sources to support his notability. As I am a new Wiki user, I would appreciate the help of more experienced editors in the resubmission process. I saw you have an interest in Armenia, as do I, and it would be great to raise visibility of Armenians in an otherwise Euro-centric space. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PinkElixir (talkcontribs) 03:26, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Flags on userboxes

[kulemba source]

I've tried to clone {{User in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol}} from {{User in Lombardy}} but the flag on Commons is at File:Flag of Trentino-South Tyrol.svg and I can't figure out how to customise the name of the flag to be not derived from the page name - any ideas?Le Deluge (talk) 15:16, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I fixed the flag, I believe, but you should not have a slash (/) in the template name. It will cause all sorts of problems. See WP:NC-SLASH for a little more information. I recommend moving the page to a name with a hyphen or redirecting to {{User in Trentino-South Tyrol}}, which already exists. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:42, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

User location templates

[kulemba source]

Hello, and thank you for setting up the user location templates. I see that a couple of them link to disambiguation pages. By analogy with {{User Georgia (U.S. state)/par}}, I think {{User Palestine/par}} may need something like |wpt=the State of Palestine and {{User Victoria/par}} something like |wpt=Victoria, Australia. However, as they have complex substs, I thought I'd better leave this one to the expert. Certes (talk) 20:34, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Buaidh,

I noticed that you created List of mountain peaks of Washington back in 2015. This article appears to be a duplicate of List of mountain peaks of Washington (state). Can you help to merge these two articles in a way that seems fit? It is confusing that these articles have nearly the same name, and similar (but different) content. I have also raised this discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mountains#Merge_/_redirect_List_of_mountain_peaks_of_Washington_(state)_with_List_of_mountain_peaks_of_Washington, if you would like to comment there. I don't have a preference to "keep" your article or the other one, but it would be helpful to keep only one of these two articles.

Thanks, Natg 19 (talk) 16:35, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

The List of mountain peaks of Washington has the more accurate updated elevation figures and is completely consistent with the following 19 lists:
  1. List of mountain peaks of Alaska
  2. List of mountain peaks of Arizona
  3. List of mountain peaks of California
  4. List of mountain peaks of Central America
  5. List of mountain peaks of Colorado
  6. List of mountain peaks of Greenland
  7. List of mountain peaks of Hawaii
  8. List of mountain peaks of Idaho
  9. List of mountain peaks of Mexico
  10. List of mountain peaks of Montana
  11. List of mountain peaks of Nevada
  12. List of mountain peaks of New Mexico
  13. List of mountain peaks of North America
  14. List of mountain peaks of Oregon
  15. List of mountain peaks of Utah
  16. List of mountain peaks of Wyoming
  17. List of mountain peaks of the Caribbean
  18. List of mountain peaks of the Rocky Mountains
  19. List of mountain peaks of the United States

I was unaware of the List of mountain peaks of Washington (state) when I created the List of mountain peaks of Washington. We could merge the List of mountain peaks of Washington into the List of mountain peaks of Washington (state). The List of mountain peaks of Washington and the 19 above lists use a prominence cutoff of 500 meters (1640.4 feet) rather than the 300 meters (984.3 feet) of the older list. We should probably use the greater cutoff. Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk contribs 17:46, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Sure, that sounds like a good plan to me. @Buaidh: Can you work on the merge? I don't know much about prominence cutoffs, so if the 500m cutoff is more accurate, then we should use that. Natg 19 (talk) 00:54, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I am trying to update https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AWhatLinksHere&target=Ras+Al+Khaimah&namespace=10 so that they link to Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah rather than Ras Al Khaimah.

coord template placement

[kulemba source]

Per the template documentation and MOS:ORDER, {{coord}} is placed near the bottom of an article after navboxes and before categories. olderwiser 22:40, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Also, I don't think "State" in the phrase "U.S. State" should be capitalized. Not sure where or if that is articulated anywhere, but it is not a proper name. olderwiser 22:42, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
    • I will comply with the first, but not the second request. As per United States public law, the proper name of each state is the "State of" or the "Commonwealth of". Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk contribs 22:47, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
      • [citation needed] The phrase you are applying is U.S. State which is a casual (as well as redundantly phrased) reference and not the full legal name of the states. olderwiser 22:51, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
        • Not a problem, I'll make it formal.  Buaidh  talk contribs 22:55, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
          • Please stop changes like this without further discussion - the descriptions have to clarify "US" or "U.S.", as "state" can have other meanings, is not fully descriptive, and can be unclear (e.g. Georgia). Therefore "U.S. state of XYZ" is preferable here, with "state" lowercase. ɱ (talk) 23:27, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
            • I'm afraid I disagree. I don't think I could be any clearer. I worked for one of these U.S. states for many years. Please go ahead and discuss.  Buaidh  talk contribs 23:31, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
              • See how that link is, lowercase, and specifying "U.S."? Same with {{Infobox U.S. state}}. Any other format is improper here. ɱ (talk) 23:36, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
                • By golly I see. If I'm discussing a generic state, then its a lowercase U.S. state. If I'm discussing a proper name, then its the State of Alabama. What a revelation.  Buaidh  talk contribs 23:43, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
                  • I agree with Ɱ here. There is considerable variation in capitalization of "state" in various contexts. Wikipedia has its own style guide and does not necessarily follow the stylization used by the referenced entity itself. Else, for example, we'd refer to "The Ohio State University" or TIME magazine. olderwiser 23:51, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Deleting references

[kulemba source]

Hey there! I've noticed that several edits you've made have deleted definitions of references that are still in use within the article. I've cleaned them up, and one of the robots has cleaned up a bunch too. I hope you'll consider checking the results of your changes before moving along; there's no reason to leave an article in worse condition than you found it. -- Mikeblas (talk) 00:37, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

My apologies. I will check more carefully. These CDPs have been updated since 2010 United States Census, but I will wait until the 2010 United States Census population figures are in to update the CDP references. No worries at all! It's very easy to get tripped-up in referencing things. I see over on Beulah Valley, Colorado you reverted my edit a few minute ago. That brings back an undefined reference you added. Is there a reason that you want the article to present an error in referencing to the user? Maybe you're intending to add a definition for the "ZIPcode" reference you added, but for now it's not there. And so the article shows "Cite error: The named reference ZIPcode was invoked but never defined" instead of any useful reference. -- Mikeblas (talk) 21:09, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi there, please don't add external links to GNIS. Have a look at Felch Corner, Maine for an example of how to use the GNIS template. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 13:30, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

I just noticed you have 266,000 edits. I thought you were a new editor! Magnolia677 (talk) 13:32, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm not sure how this link to the county website benefits readers at Todd Creek. I spend so much time cleaning up barely-related junk links. Why add more? Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:05, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

Since Todd Creek is unincorporated, it is subject to Adams County government. Have you ever lived in an unincorporated community? Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk contribs 19:10, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
If the community in question does not have its own website, just exclude external links. At WP:EL a consensus of editors have agreed that external links should be useful to the reader. The county website offers little information about the unincorporated communities in the county, so why send readers there? Magnolia677 (talk) 22:34, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
I obviously disagree. Having lived in two Colorado census-defined places, I think I know a bit about them. I hope to find additional links later. I have 217 of these to deal with. Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk contribs 02:18, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:WikiProject Punjab (India) members requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! It's a long way to Colorado Wiknics now!

[kulemba source]

Buaidh, at Wikiconference North America this weekend I was pondering how I never quite made it to a Colorado Wiknic, and of course you'll have had to move the 2020 version online. I'm not aware of a user group here in Utah now, so I might be happy to crash your online meetups for some Wikicamaraderie. Take care! KarenJoyce (talk) 22:03, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Tallest Peaks in Arizona, Mingus Mountain

[kulemba source]

Hello Buaidh, Thanks for making a great list. I Hiked up up Mingus the other day from Cottonwood and decided to take a look at what kind of elevation I got to and see where it ranked. According to most maps, and my gps device, it is about 7818ft/2383m. This would put it at the 20th slot (taller than Aztec Peak) <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mingus_Mountain> , <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mountain_peaks_of_Arizona> .Thought I would consult with you since you have made the majority of this page, which is much appreciated! Best regards, Philipp777 (talk) 03:34, 27 December 2020 (UTC) Phil.

Happy New Year!
Hello Buaidh:

Did you know ... that back in 1885, Wikipedia editors wrote Good Articles with axes, hammers and chisels?

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unnecessary blisters.
