Title
Neolithic: Lithic implement / worked flake / tertiary debitage
Malongosolelo
English: A complete worked / knapped flint flake / tertiary debitage, of probable Neolithic dating (c. 3500 BC to c. 2100 BC).

The flake is sub oval in plan, and lentoid in cross section. The ventral (upper) surface exhibits one longituditional flake scar and several diagonal ones. Evidence of controlled flaking is present along a couple of the edges, indicating retouch. The dorsal (lower) surface is smooth, and exhibits a bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples.

The flake measures 44.85 mm in length, 23.30 mm wide and 5.33 mm thick. It weighs 4.6 g.

The flake is a mid brown colour. No surface patination is present, suggesting that it has spent minimal time in the plough soil.

Worked flakes / tertiary debitage flakes such as this example, are considered to be broadly Neolithic in dating (c. 3500 BC to c. 2100 BC).
