Warm welcome

[kulemba source]

Hi Victuallers, I am thrilled to see you creating a userpage on this wiki even though you may not be able to speak/communicate in Chitumbuka, or you may understand the language with difficulties. While that doesn't matter, I just want to welcome you as one thing I am sure, despite language barrier, you may spot vandalism/spam and may not hesitate to revert it.
As suggested on your userpage, it is amazing seeing someone interested in Malawi and such.

Your English Wikipedia work especially about Malawi and other African countries is amazing.

Thank you. Yewo chomene (thank you). Tumbuka Arch 20:30, 12 Malichi 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi,I'm very interested in Malawi. I have joined the Scottish Malawi Partnership and I'm trying to revive the Malawi Wikiproject. I think a key is images of Malawians. I have made contact with a Malawian wikipedian who speaks Chichwa. I think you are the first person I have met who speaks chitumbuka. As you guess, I have no language skills here, but I intend to increase the profile of women in these three languages. Agnes Patemba is the latest addition and I have recruited a photographer to get a photo of her. A stub in chitumbuka would help...is there a page where I post such a request in English without causing offence? My best regards. @Victuallers My apologies for not seeing this on time as I didn't get a notification since you didn't use a ping.
Wow, it's great to hear that you even joined SMP! Let me know if the photo you requested may take longer than expected.

Yes, we do have such a spot here where you can drop anything in English and translations may be underway in no time. This place is here. Alternatively, you may use Google Translate paired with English - Tumbuka (en-tum). If you are unable to find/locate Tumbuka, simply check on letter 'T'. Machine translated articles may be posted there or directly in the mainspace. Other editors (including myself) usually patrol recent changes and may fix some minor issues. There are no serious issues with Google Translate when paired with en-tum, as far as I have tested. Translation quality is similar to someone with Babel-4 (similar to native).

Your intention to increase the women profile is wonderful. It is good to have you. Even just dropping red links, other editors (including myself) may create needed articles.
Thank you. :)

My fault for no @Tumbuka Arch:... sorry. However I am really keen to find you and this Wikipedia. We have put together a Wikimania proposal which is here. Imnot sure what support it will get but lets see. Impressive that you take Machine translated articles. I have written thirty biogs recently - the best of these are Agnes Patemba, Ivy Kamanga (what a hero!), Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus and Thondwe from Malawo and Fiona Smith (Church of Scotland) and Susan Dalgety from Scotland. Who are the missing women in your eyes? Do you have any photos of people or places? I'm very keen to find some. cheers Roger aka Victuallers (pakuchezgela) 16:16, 24 Malichi 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Victuallers, I haven't had been active for days. Firstly, I am overjoyed to hear that you would like to find me and this wiki. Well, I would like to find you too and this wiki is looking forward to meeting you as well:).

I have seen the articles that need to be created and will work on that. Yes, I do have some photos on some Malawian women and I may upload them to this wiki.

Also, the link you pointed is not working. If you would like to know my current whereabouts, etc., please use email.

(Side note: Please note that if I don't respond on time it's because I may not have been active. Don't feel discouraged, I may still respond no matter how long it takes, once active).

Thank you so much. Yewo chomene:) Tumbuka Arch 14:30, 10 Epulelo 2025 (UTC)Reply

I had a useful meeting on Glasgow yesterday featuring several Malawians and people working there. One of them speaks Tumbuko and enquired after "my friend". Our proposed project was discussed and it is mentioned here. I will wait for a reply!! Victuallers (pakuchezgela) 15:38, 10 Epulelo 2025 (UTC)Reply

Misc

Hello Victuallers, I have just discovered that there is a whole list of Malawian women in red here, most of which, already have data on Wikidata. I have started adding some here and I am sure by the end of two weeks or so, I will be done most of them. I will expand them to other Malawian wikis.

I am also thinking of running Wikipedia awareness campaign across the country after general elections are over to encourage people to participate in contributing knowledge on 3 Wikipedias, namely tumwiki, enwiki and nywiki.

It's sad to see a country with 22+ million people, with only 3 established active editors on enwiki, 2 on nywiki and 6 established ones on tumwiki. -- -Tumbuka Arch 03:36, 4 Ogasiti 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tumbuka Arch.... that's (y)our work! One of our members Dsp13 has been adding women to that list at our encouragement. Its a women in red list... thats my home project. Its doubled in size. @Dsp13: is talking about this work at Wikimania this week. The project we are putting together (Motokazi) intends to address the very problem you identify. One of our key prospective partners/members is you. Sadly we did not get a talking slot at Wikimania but we are applying for a slot at WikiIndaba in Tanzania in November. To my mind, doubling the number of active editors in Malawi is a good idea but what we need is dozens of editors to arrive from the diaspora and more. That is our current ambition. I am talking at Wikimania tomorrow and one of the articles mentioned is the Tumbuka translation of Agnes Patemba - your work! Its getting a fine profile.... more translations are key. We are talking to NGOs and govs. We are not short of ambition here. Maybe a zoom call? Email? Victuallers (pakuchezgela) 07:22, 4 Ogasiti 2025 (UTC)Reply
